“Technical translation is a type of specialized translation involving the translation of documents produced by technical writers”. This type of translation is about technological fields and about practical application of scientific and technological information.
What comes to your mind when considering technical translation is using specialized terminology. However, this is not the sufficient perquisite of having a technical text and it should have some other features as well. In order to translate a technical text, you should know the specialized texts, subject area, its terminology, and writing conventions.
The note in translating terminologies is that the translator needs to be consistent. Using translation database is very important in this regard. It can be said that technical translation is twofold. On the one hand, it can be the translation of texts which are about scientific and technical subjects; on the other hand, technical translation is the one that needs a technical translator who is knowledgeable in both the field and its specialized terms in the source and target languages.
Translators in this case transfer the information and make the procedural discourse. In other words, they need to make new meaning. Thus, they should have knowledge in different fields and curriculum in order to understand the theoretical and linguistic aspects of the text. Knowing professional translation is also important for a technical translator. In general, an expert translator should have learned the terminology, vocabulary, and tone of such texts.
In the specialized translation, the translator should have sufficient familiarity with the meanings of the field terms and the terms used in the text. For example, disciplines such as medicine, philosophy, law, electricity, basic science, etc. have a lot of terms that translators of these disciplines should be aware of.
Therefore, it can be concluded that in order to achieve a specialized translation in a particular field, the translator should have the following abilities:
1- Take control of the vocabulary and terminology available in that field.
2- Know the rules and techniques of the original texts.
3. Master the literature and the writing style of the target language in order to implement the purpose of the original text in the target language.
To translate a technical text, the following steps can be adhered to:
1. Analysis: Translation in a technical way needs to realization of the text and its tone (natural) and register (formal or informal). These are usually recognized through the text and the context.
2. Comprehension: To comprehend the text, the translator needs to use his previous experiences in the domain or transfer his other experiences in other like domains to his translation.
3. Translation: In this stage, translators try to make up their mind upon their experiences and the time they have. He can also use references materials in case he can not come into a good decision. For equivalent items, translation machines can be very helpful, however, he should consider the ethics and laws of the place where he translates.
4. Revision. In the last step, revision takes place. It is done by the translator himself or by a reviser. For some fields like medical texts, revision is essential since mistakes can have irreparable damages for the community. In addition, making the text according to the guidelines can be done in this stage.
