Who Should Translate Technical Texts?

Who should translate technical  texts?

It's better to change the belief that translation can be done by all people who are familiar with two languages. Indeed, in practice, it's easy to see that very few of these people are good translators. Translation is a complex and challenging art. Individuals with a set of translation skills, personal qualities, knowledge, and experience can succeed in this area. But, can we trust someone who translates in all fields?

In fact, it can be said that the translator of specialized texts is someone who does not only have a special dictionary or good linguistic knowledge. In translating specialized texts, proper and coherent translation of specialized terminologies and phrases is one of the most tangible issues. However, it is crystal clear that specialized translation is not only related to this issue, since these texts often contain names, events, and explanations which only the translators who are active in that particular area can translate correctly.

In fact, these people are less misunderstood in realizing the terms and expressions and as such, can create a sense of trust between customers and themselves. So, try to give your translation texts to those who are specialized in a particular field and fully understand its dictionary, resources, journals, text style, specialized terminology, events, and  ..... In addition, they have acquired sufficient skills in the field of translation and can provide a more reliable translation for the clients.

Furthermore, they are those who are interested in the particular field and have written books in its domain. Additionally, they collaborate with organizations, institutions, or companies of the field and have published some translations with their help. In addition, since specialized translation has many challenges and its vocabulary and concepts are constantly changing, a good specialized translator tries to constantly update his knowledge in the concerned field. As a scientist and reader in his field, he is very fluent in his specialized field. Such a translator attempts to display a clear and unambiguous style in his translations. Also, taking into account the translation audience, whether educated or public, is another characteristic of this translator.

Another feature which can determine a good specialized translator is his ability to understand the value of the original text. In order to develop this understanding, the translator needs to be aware of the cultural differences and discourse strategies of both the source and destination languages, thereby discovering the hidden structure of the source text. A good translator should be familiar with the culture, the adverbs, and the social situations of both languages. He should also be aware of religions, speaking, and social stratification in both languages. This cultural and social awareness can greatly improve the quality of the translation. In translation, the social structure of the style is more important.

Although translating specialized words and terminologies is the distinguishing feature of specialized translation, a good translator tries to adjust the rate of formalization of the text by considering the type of the document and change the use of specialized vocabulary, depending on the type of document. In the end, it can be said that a specialized translator should have many features in order to be trusted.
